Early Life

His father always wanted him to be a Doctor, the reason he shifted to Patna after his schooling. And, he became a Science student there.
Meanwhile, he joined RSS and also became the leader of ABVP, a student organization.
Once he got imprisoned due to a protest which he was leading and spent some days behind the bars. Then, there he started reading Hindi literature and got completely immersed in it.
Later, after getting out of Jail, he saw a play named ‘Andha Kuaan’ which inspired him to join the acting field. So, he started understanding the basics of a play and later also started performing in various plays.

After doing a lot of theatre in Patna, Pankaj decided to move to NSD. So, he tried for NSD but didn’t get selected in his first attempt. He also failed the second attempt, so his uncle suggested him to get into FCI to earn some good money in foreign.

He attempted for FCI and got selected in it. Then he joined a Hotel in Patna as a trainee also learned some dishes there. He didn’t get the chance to go foreign for ‘good money’, but he did try for NSD for one more time in 2001. Meanwhile, he married Mridula Tripathi and also, selected in NSD at the same time.
“In a TV show, Pankaj Tripathi revealed that, at once, he and his wife Mridula used to live together in NSD’s hostel. But later, the warden of the hostel asked them to shift somewhere else.”
In 2004, after completing his training from NSD, he moved to Patna again and did some theatre for some months. Later, Pankaj shifted to Mumbai along with his wife in search of work in the acting field.

In 2004, Pankaj Tripathi made his debut in Bollywood from a guest role in an action-comedy-romance movie Run. Abhishek Bachchan and Bhoomika Chawala were in the leads of the movie, but Vijay Raaz’s role was really applauded by the audience.

Later, in 2005, he appeared in Prakash Jha directed movie Apaharan. He worked with actors like Ajay Devgan and Bipasha Basu in the movie.

Then, he appeared in movies like Omkara, Dharm, Aakrosh, Shaurya, Chillar Party, and Agneepath. Later, he also appeared in movies including Dabangg 2, Rangrezz, ABCD, and Gunday. In 2013, he also starred in a Telugu film.

Masaan was released in 2015, and the interesting fact is the movie was released at Cannes Film Festival and in France before it was released in India. The major cast of the movie was Richa Chadda, Vicky Kaushal and Sanjay Mishra. 

With those supremely talented actors, Tripathi also appeared in the movie. He has a very short role in the movie, however, he made his own identity in that short time.


Pankaj Tripathi has played the role of Atma Singh in Amit Masurkar’s directorial film Newton. He played the character of an Assistant Commandant, leading a CRPF team in a Naxal area. Rajkumar Rao played the character of Newton, a government clerk who was on his election duty in the same area.

His performance in Newton lets him win the National Award for it. Even the film got the National Film Award under the category of the Best Feature film.

Gangs of Wasseypur

On June 22, 2012, Gangs of Wasseypur-part 1 was released. It was written, directed and produced by Anurag Kashyap.

There was a character of ‘Sultan Qureshi’ in the movie, played by Tripathi. Sultan Qureshi, one who cuts sixty buffaloes in a day, a henchman of Ramadheer Singh, and only purpose – to kill Sardar Khan (Manoj Bajpayee) and his children.

One of his popular dialogue is – 

“Yeh Wasseypur hai, yahaan Kabootar bhi ek pankh se udta hai aur doosre se apna izzat bachaata hai.” 

Pankaj also appeared in the second part of the Gangs of Wasseypur. And, from then only he came into the ‘limelight’ and his talent gets recognized by the film industry and the audiences.

In 2020, Pankaj appeared in Angrezi Medium, starring Radhika Madan and Irrfan Khan.

Sacred Games

Sacred Games, a web series based on Vikram Chandra’s novel with the same name. Tripathi’s character was shown in a very mysterious way in its first season. He played the role of ‘Khanna Guruji’ or ‘Guruji’ in the series.

In the season of Sacred Games, his character somehow became the main protagonist and he ran the series in his own delicate way. If you wanna be his ‘student’ just subscribe to Netflix and obviously for that you ‘Must Sacrifice.’


In this world of web series, you must be familiar with Kaleen Bhaiya aka Akahandanand Tripathi. The series was released in 2018 on Amazon Prime.
